Let me start this post with a warning: never, ever select a domain name registrar based on price alone. Make sure you trust them. Learn about their customer service. There’s more to a domain registrar than just pricing.

That said, price is always a key factor. And it can be hard to figure out which domain registrar has the best prices with such a dizzying number of registrars and top level domains to compare.

The best resource I’ve found for locating good prices is domcomp. Domcomp shows the best prices for new registrations, renewals, and transfers for hundreds of top level domains.

The distinction between new, renewal, and transfer is an important one. For example, right now, domcomp shows the lowest prices for .com as $4.15 at Porkbun (podcast) and $4.99 at GoDaddy. These are first-year prices and have limits; 3 domains at Porkbun and 1 at GoDaddy.

While those are great deals, you’ll want to see what the domains renew for. Domcomp reports that the best .com renewal price is currently $8.56 at Porkbun and $8.99 at Dynadot.

Domcomp becomes even more critical when registering and renewing new top level domains and country code top level domains due to significant pricing disparities and first-year discounts.

Also, keep in mind that many domain name registrars offer discounted rates to high volume customers like domain investors. You just have to ask.
