127,000 second level .au domains have been registered

Initial registration surge wanes, but expect more after priority period.

Australian businesses and consumers have registered 127,000 second level .au domain names so far, a little over a month since they were launched.

Until March 24 of this year, you could only register third level domains such as example.com.au and example.org.au. Now, you can register domains like example.au.

35,000 second level .au direct domain names were registered in the first 24 hours of launch, and almost 80,000 by March 31.

To put this in perspective, there are now 3.5 million domains registered under the third and second levels of .au.

The initial rush has subsided but you can expect another jump around six months after the launch.

Right now, priority is given to registrants that have a matching third level domain. So unless you’re interested in a domain that hasn’t been registered at the third level, you’ll need to wait until the priority period ends in September.

auDA, the group that manages the .au ccTLD, published its Q1 report earlier this week.
