AWS acquires cybersecurity startup Sqrrl to strengthen its public cloud security

Amazon Web Services has acquired the Cambridge-based cybersecurity startup, Sqrrl, to bolster its public cloud security. Sqrrl provides a Threat Hunting platform which utilizes link analysis, machine learning, and multi-petabyte scalability. The solution helps in detecting the advanced threats faster. After the disclosure of Meltdown and Spectre attacks, the cloud security has become number one priority for tech giants. Moreover, AWS is a leader in the public cloud, and the company is leaving no stone unturned to add layers of security to its cloud. In November 2017, Amazon rolled out a number of new security and encryption features for Simple Storage Service (S3) to make it easier for customers to protect their data. AWS has not made any comment about the Sqqrl acquisition, however, Sqrrl CEO has confirmed the deal by posting a message on the homepage of Sqrrl website. “We’re thrilled to share that Sqrrl has been acquired by Amazon. We will be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we’re looking forward to working together on customer offerings for the future,” wrote Mark Terenzoni, Sqrrl CEO. “For now, it is business as usual at Sqrrl. We will continue to work with customers to provide advanced threat hunting capabilities. And, over time, we’ll work with AWS to do even more on your behalf. Thank you for your support. We really appreciate the trust customers have put into Sqrrl over the past five years, and we are excited about the next phase of our journey.” Also read: Amazon looking to establish its presence in Saudi Arabia   The acquisition was first disclosed by Axios, who reported last month that Amazon was in discussion to acquire Sqrrl for a predicted price of $40 million. The co-founders of Sqrrl used to work for the US government in National Security Agency (NSA) and White House’s National Security Staff (NSS).
