CAPRE’s West Coast Wednesday: From Silicon Valley to the World, October 2, 2019

  • Pioneer Consulting to Provide Support to Southern Cross NEXT System: Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) has entered the construction phase for its planned NEXT submarine cable network, and the leading international telecommunications firm, Pioneer Consulting, will continue to provide support throughout the implementation period. With the ready for service date (RFS) scheduled on or before Q1 2022, Pioneer Consulting’s expert team will provide a full suite of project management and engineering support related to the construction and delivery for Southern Cross’ NEXT system that will connect Australia, New Zealand and California, USA—including spurs to Fiji, Tokelau, and Kiribati. Southern Cross NEXT will be the largest capacity link providing data-center connectivity between Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles and the planned 16,148km system will be the lowest latency path from Australia and New Zealand to the USA, as well as provide trunks and diversity for the intermediate locations.

    class="epi-fontLg bwalignc">CENIC and Link Oregon Partner to Establish a High-Speed Oregon-California Network Connection: An agreement between CENIC and Link Oregon establishes a unique regional partnership that allows both organizations to share resources and expertise in providing extended fiber broadband network capabilities and services to research, education, and other public-service organizations across California and Oregon—and eventually beyond. The new agreement gives Link Oregon direct access to CENIC’s networks, supercomputing facilities, bundled peering, and participation in experimental network activities, initiatives, testbeds, technical support services, workshops, conferences, and other critical services. CENIC will benefit from closer collaboration in research, data-sharing, education support, and other service activities across a broader geography.
  • IOTAS Raises $8.5M to Launch IoT-as-a-Service for Enterprise: IOTAS, the leading IoT-as-a-Service smart apartment platform, is proud to announce the completion of its Series A round of funding led by TELUS Ventures and including participation by Liberty Global. Early investor, Intel Capital, recommitted capital in this round to fuel growth. IOTAS’ total investment to date exceeds $17 million. This round of funding will be directed toward driving growth of IOTAS’ Enterprise SaaS offering, a new platform for Smart Communities and expansion into international markets. IOTAS creates Smart Apartments for the $1 Trillion Multi-Family-Home (MFH) real estate industry1. The MFH industry sees Internet-of-Things (IoT) as the future because it attracts more residents at premium leasing rates while reducing operating costs and mitigating risks such as water leaks that average $11,000 per incident. IOTAS is seen as the leading turnkey IoT provider in the PropTech market because it paves a faster and easier path to transforming units into smart apartments.
  • MC Digital Realty To Acquire Additional Land In Tokyo To Develop 120-Megawatt Connected Campus: Digital Realty has signed an agreement to acquire an additional plot of land in Tokyo.  MC Digital Realty expects to close on the acquisition in the first quarter of 2020.  The new site is strategically located in Greater Tokyo’s Inzai data center cluster, in close proximity to the five-acre parcel MC Digital Realty acquired earlier this year, likewise located in the Inzai data center cluster and expected to support the development of a 38-megawatt facility. Under MC Digital Realty’s Tokyo Connected Campus @ Inzai development roadmap, the first building to be constructed on the new land parcel will be a 36-megawatt facility (NRT11), followed by a 30-megawatt facility (NRT12) and an 18-megawatt facility (NRT13), each subject to customer demand. The two parcels will be combined to construct a connected campus, expected to deliver more than 120 megawatts of total IT capacity for global and regional customers.
  • LADWP and CoreSite Announce Major Energy Savings: CoreSite Realty Corporation celebrated CoreSite’s energy efficiency savings this week in an award ceremony with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). CoreSite, one of the nation’s premier data center corporations and a key customer of the LADWP, received a nearly $3 million rebate earlier this year for energy efficiency upgrades at its LA2 facility in downtown Los Angeles. LADWP’s Custom Performance Program provided the incentive to help CoreSite implement an extensive cooling system retrofit that has yielded more than 9.8 million kWh of energy savings annually.
