Check out the latest in deals, development and disruptive technology in the data center industry for September 23, 2019:

• Google to Invest $3.3 Billion USD to Expand European Data Centers: Google is doubling down on its European footprint. “Today, I announced that we plan to invest 3 billion euros to expand our data centers across Europe over the next two years. That will bring our total investment in Europe’s internet infrastructure to 15 billion euros since 2007,” wrote Google’s CEO Sundar Picha in a blogpost. “As part of this new investment, we plan to invest another 600 million euros in 2020 to expand our data centre presence in Hamina, Finland, bringing the total investment by Google to 2 billion euros since 2009. Our investments will support approximately 4,300 jobs in Finland per year on average, over the next two years and beyond.”

• Switch is Expanding in Las Vegas: The Las Vegas Review Journalis reporting that Switch has acquired a major parcel of land near its Las Vegas HQ. “A few months after it celebrated a massive expansion plan, Switch appears to have bought big tracts of land near its Las Vegas headquarters. Property records indicate the data-center operator purchased about 36 acres in the southwest valley for $28.8 million. The sale closed Aug. 27,” writes the Journal. “The land – acquired through an obscure limited-liability company whose address is the same as Switch’s – is mostly at the southwest corner of Jones Boulevard and the 215 Beltway, with a few parcels closer to Rainbow Boulevard just south of the Beltway. No zoning applications or other project plans have been filed for the parcels in recent months, according to Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin.”

• Schneider Electric Launches EcoStruxure IT Community: APC by Schneider Electric has launched the EcoStruxure IT Community, an online forum exclusive to our channel partners. In this forum, partners can interact with both APC Partner Success Managers as well as other partners to help each other succeed by asking questions and sharing resources, best practices, and so on. Schneider Electric EcoStruxure IT for Partners is APC’s cloud-based data center infrastructure management (DCIM) platform. It provides complete visibility through a single pane of glass into distributed IT environments, giving partners the ability to monitor not just their customer’s centralized data centers, but remote edge locations and hybrid IT environments. It helps partners right-size power and cooling, identify security vulnerabilities and pinpoint opportunities to bring applications to the cloud, to name a few capabilities. Through the EcoStruxure IT Expert component, managed service providers can monitor and manage customer data centers and remote facilities on behalf of their customers–providing a valuable service while generating recurring revenue.

• Western Digital Introduces High-Endurance Storage Solutions: Western Digital has introduced a portfolio of products to address its customers’ growing need for high-endurance storage solutions in demanding industrial, smart and advanced manufacturing environments, including a wide variety of IoT devices. The portfolio deploys advanced, high-endurance 3D NAND in a variety of form factors to provide industrial-market solutions for systems designers of edge computing gateways, robotics, medical, inspection / surveillance, and artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) applications for industrial and IoT system designers. Western Digital Industrial storage products are an ideal solution for equipment that must operate in harsh environments such as elevated temperatures, humidity, extreme elevation or vibration. These solutions offer the ability to store and process more data with extended data retention. 

• VA Governor Announces Expansion of Cloud Computing Degree Programs: Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam (D) has announced a new collaboration between Amazon Web Services and select K-12 school divisions, the Virginia Community College System and leading four-year universities. This collaboration will create opportunities and build pathways to high-skilled and high-wage cloud computing careers for students in all regions of the Commonwealth. As part of the collaboration, participating academic institutions will use AWS Educate, an initiative to support cloud technology learning for students and faculty. AWS Educate will allow schools to incorporate cloud skills into high school STEM curriculum as well as associate and bachelor degree programs. This collaboration will also help employers throughout Virginia who have a growing need for workers with cloud computing skills.
