It’s official. It’s meta.
Pile into the meta bandwagon!
Facebook formally announced today that it’s renaming itself Meta as it hopes to capitalize on all-encompassing computing in the metaverse. It will also change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS. It is using the domain name Meta.com, but that currently forwards to about.facebook.com/meta.
Domain name investors have been registering meta-related domains in droves over the past month or two, but that was well before leaks about a possible Facebook name change. It strikes me that it will be more difficult for Facebook to manage its brand by rebranding itself after a popular and generic term.
There’s also a question about if this is just a Google-style rebranding. Google rebranded as Alphabet but kept its core brands intact. Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram will remain iconic brands. So how important the term Meta is to its overarching brand strategy going forward will be something to watch.
Still, for domain investors registering meta-themed domains, this should add more fuel to the fire of the importance of the terms meta and metaverse going forward.
