I have written about my dislike for Rob Monster over the years and once again he’s popped back into the headlines for a negative reason. Epik was recently hacked DESPITE being told by Security Researcher Corben Leo that Epik had a security vulnerability on it’s website (source here) According to Techcrunch
Leo told TechCrunch that a library used on Epik’s WHOIS page for generating PDF reports of public domain records had a decade-old vulnerability that allowed anyone to remotely run code directly on the internal server without any authentication, such as a company password.
I don’t know the extent of the damage but if you believe the non confirmed talk in the forums and discords you should definitely be putting a freeze on your credit card. Whether you believe Epik stands for Freedom of Speech, it 100% stands for the Religious Right to the point that he said he publicly “prefers to do business with Zealots” . I have always felt he put his religious beliefs above his company and his customers. And like he always does he turned directly to his religious following to discuss the matter. A 4 hour live meeting where of course, Neo-Nazis came to join
According to the Daily Dot
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Andrew “weev” Auernheimer, a notorious hacker and neo-Nazi who aids white supremacist sites such as the Daily Stormer, entered the meeting.
Monster responded to weev, who he said he had never met before, with a friendly greeting: “Much love to you.”
“weev” was given the floor and went on to discuss his views and tell why he supports slavery. All of which really sounds like Monster is on his way to helping fix the hacking issue.
One of the thing that has bothered me most over the years is watching other domain investors “not want any controversy”, backing away from confronting Epik and choices they have made over the year. Moves that allowed Epik to continue to grow and push the far right agenda. I realized that many of my “friends” did not like the anxiety and hardship that may come from calling out Epik in years past. A move that let me know that if I needed help or support that it too would only come if it didn’t involve anxiety and the loss of business. Which ironically is something that Rob Monster doesn’t worry about.
I will end this saying, I don’t want anyone to be hacked. It’s a horrible event. The people that stand to lose the most is not the company but the customers and the employees. It involves lawsuits, credit holds, and lots of wasted time fixing things that only prevent loss and don’t provide any gain. Nobody wins. I’ll be praying for all the customers
Domain of the Day: DigiStreet.com Sounds like a company that a larger company bought out and swallowed their utility
Quote of the Day: “The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I’ll never be as good as a wall.”
